President Smitherman expresses his thanks to all of the membership for your hard work with our two petitions, Red Light Cameras and Proportional Representation (PR), that made it to the November 4, 2008 ballot!
November 11, 2008
Dear Membership,
I am writing briefly to thank all of you for you hard work with our two petitions, Red Light Cameras and Proportional Representation (PR). We successfully got both issues on the ballot and I want to thank everyone who took the time to help collect the 29,000 signatures. Secondly, Cincinnati is the first city in the country to ban Red light cameras! Cincinnati City Council can no longer use the $1 million dollars they predicted in revenue to balance their budget on the backs of citizens. Voters sent a strong message to City Council and the Mayor by saying no to Red Light Cameras. Finally, we did not win the PR battle, but there were over 52, 000 people who voted to support PR. We lost by 8,000 votes which is very close.
I want to thank our great membership and Executive Committee for their leadership on both issues. The Cincinnati NAACP has gotten three issues on the ballot in 18 months and won two. The Cincinnati NAACP will continue to petition the government in 2009.
Again, thank you for your hard work and dedication to the Cincinnati Branch.
Christopher Smitherman, President |
