  • The Cincinnati NAACP General Membership meeting is tonight Thursday, February 26, 2009 at 6:00 PM at South Avondale Elementary School located at 633 Prospect across from the Cincinnati Urban League.  The NAACP meetings are open to members and the public.  The key item on the agenda tonight is the "No Confidence" vote for Mayor Mark Mallory.  The Cincinnati NAACP still remains concerned that the central point of his State of the City Address was a $200 million streetcar for downtown Cincinnati.  The City of Cincinnati's SBE numbers show that the City spent $656 million in contracts and African American businesses received $269,909.    The strong Mayor did not mention these numbers in his speech.   Also nothing was said about African American developers advancing any project anywhere in the City of Cincinnati.  Our members will have an opportunity to hear these numbers and issues first hand at tonight's meeting.  If you are not a member of the Cincinnati NAACP in good standing you are not able to vote or participate in the debate.

  • Christopher Smitherman will be in court tomorrow Friday, February 27, 2009 at 8:30 AM in Judge Martin's Courtroom regarding the CMHA Lawsuit against the City of Cincinnati.  Attorney Chris Finney is representing Christopher Smitherman.  He has done an excellent job on this case.  All are welcome to join him at the Hamilton County Courthouse.  The courtroom is a public place and citizens are allowed to be present.  Smitherman is suing City Council for stripping the City Manager of his appointment power.  Note that the CMHA Board is throwing a 92 year old African American man on the street.  This man was born around 1916 and had been robbed several times before discharging his fire arm out of fear.

  • William Mayo's parole was denied this week.  The Cincinnati NAACP is very sad to get this news but it only strengthens our resolve to get William Mayo out of prison.  Erica Farris, Executive Committee Member, will update the membership on his case and the next actions steps.

  • We are in the middle of a membership drive.  Memberships are just $30 for adults and $15 for youth memberships annually.   If you have not renewed your membership please do so by calling the Cincinnati NAACP office at (513) 281-1900.  You can renew your membership and join over the phone with a credit card or join on line at www.naacp.org be sure you indicate the Cincinnati Unit Number 3175 or you will not be a member of Cincinnati.  Membership forms will be available at the general membership meeting tonight and they are always available at the Cincinnati NAACP Office located at 4439 Reading Road.  Please encourage someone to join today.  There will be some membership cards available at the meeting tonight for those members who joined some months ago.

  • The Streetcar Petitions better known as the choo-choo train will be available for tonight's meeting for registered voters in the City of Cincinnati to sign.  All members who took a petition please bring them back to the meeting tonight.  President Smitherman is confident that the $200 million Streetcar will be on the November ballot.
