May 15, 2009 Cincinnati NAACP Media Release The Cincinnati NAACP and COAST have turned in to the Board of Elections over 4,300 signatures for the streetcar petition. 3,000 of the 4300 signatures for the streetcar petition have been counted and determined valid toward the 6,150 signatures needed to put the streetcar issue on the ballot. The validity rate for signatures is holding 68%. This means that the Cincinnati NAACP and COAST are halfway to certification for the streetcar. President Smitherman of the Cincinnati NAACP says, "It is amazing that so many citizens share the belief that the proposed streetcar deserves a vote." Over 86 citizens have collected signatures for the streetcar petition. The 4300 signatures were collected in the middle of the winter and in the spring during torrential rain. The deadline to have the signatures completed is July. The Cincinnati NAACP is confident that citizens of Cincinnati will have the opportunity to vote on the $200 million streetcar proposal in November. "President Obama did not send money to Cincinnati to waste on pet projects. We are very proud of our Cincinnati NAACP membership. The Cincinnati NAACP membership continues to grow which allows all of us to have real power." Smitherman says.
