Media Release June 19, 2010 . Cincinnati NAACP president,Christopher Smitherman, thinks President Obama has handled the BP crisis in the Gulf with superb leadership. The BP oil rig exploded April 20, 2010 off the Louisiana gulf coast. President Obama is facing the greatest environmental disaster U,S. has seen. Obama was sworn in as the President of the United States in January 2009. BP's oil spill began one year and four months after President Obama took office. Approval of all oil drilling permits and construction of the Deepwater Horizon rig in Louisiana Gulf Coast occurred during previous presidents. However, as President Obama faced the greatest environmental crisis the U.S. has experienced, he has not removed himself from personal accountability. There is only one entity responsible for the crisis: a London-based company called BP. However, Halliburton played a key role in this disaster. Halliburton is located in Houston, TX. Hallibuton has 50,000 employees. Dick Cheney served as CEO of Halliburton until July 25, 2000. Cheney resigned from Halliburton as CEO to serve as Vice President of U.S. under President Bush from January 20, 2001-January 20, 2009. The lack of oversight President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney gave the oil industry for 8 years has resulted in the worst environment crisis the U.S. has ever seen. "Bush and Dick Cheney are oil men to the bone. Both men gave the oil industry complete access to the White House to shape public policy for the oil industry for 8 years. They were wrong on exploding the deficit with out of control spending. They were wrong on oversight of financial markets. They were wrong on oversight for the oil industry," president Christopher Smitherman of the Cincinnati NAACP says. . President Obama made BP establish a $20 billion fund to protect the Gulf and U.S. food supply. Congressman Joe Barton a Republican from TX said Congress owes BP an apology for President Obama's $20 billion shakedown. "BP has impacted the food supply and the food chain for the entire world and Congressman Barton a republican extended an apology to BP. Barton did not share that he received $1.5 million in campaign contributions from the oil industry. President Obama had to thank GOD for Congressman Barton's comments this week as BP oil continues to pour into the Gulf," Smitherman says. .
