The YMCA Board is making a big mistake economically, socially, and politically in closing YMCA's in African American neighborhoods.
Cincinnati NAACP Media Release . CINCINNATI, OHIO - JULY 12, 2011 - The YMCA Board is making a big mistake economically, socially, and politically in closing YMCA's in African American neighborhoods while expanding other locations without serious political ramifications. The YMCA will need the African American community in the future and this decision will close all doors. "The Melrose YMCA and the Williams YMCA have a rich history and still maintain significant community support. Health indicators in the African American community continue to get worse and the YMCA Board has decided to close two locations in African American neighborhoods. Many of the health problems that impact the African American community are directly related to the lack of exercise. I urge the YMCA to reconsider their August deadline," Christopher Smtiherman, president of the Cincinnati NAACP said. |
