March 22, 2010 . Cincinnati NAACP Media Release . The Cincinnati NAACP congratulates Congressman Steve Driehaus of the 1st District for his support of the health care bill. Over 30 million Americans are without health care. Over 18 million of the 30 million are African American and Latinos. African Americans still die 10 years earlier than most Americans. "A big reason is access to health care. Health care is a right not a privilege," Christopher Smitherman, president of the Cincinnati NAACP says. . Congressman Steve Driehaus is commended for supporting President Obama on tackling an issue that no other President in 100 years has resolved. Americans that have a pre-existing condition can not be denied insurance. Americans can extend health care to their children until age 26. Americans can no longer be dropped by health insurance companies because they are sick. "The real question is how could any American be against health care reform? Parents with children who have pre-existing conditions can now purchase health insurance for their children. It is a great day to be an American," Smitherman says. . Congressman Steve Driehaus is up for re-election in November. The Cincinnati NAACP members vote but we do not endorse candidates. However, our institution has a long memory and is loyal to public policy that advances African American people. |
