CINCINNATI, OHIO - FEBRUARY 4, 2011 - The Cincinnati NAACP will launch
a petition today to stop City Council from firing the entire
Cincinnati Police Department.  Six members of Council this week began
a reckless process to fire the entire Cincinnati Police Department.
Officers would be given the opportunity to interview with Sheriff
Simon Leis.  The Mayor has been rendered powerless because six Members
of Council passed the motion.  This makes the motion veto proof.
"This is not a merger.  This is a take over," Christopher Smitherman,
president of the Cincinnati NAACP said.
.
The citizens of Cincinnati should have been given the opportunity by
Cincinnati City Council to vote on the issue in November.  The
Cincinnati NAACP and the FOP will work to collect the needed
signatures to protect police officers jobs from six members of City
Council.  "The Cincinnati NAACP and FOP legal team turned the petition
around in less than 24 hours. The petition will be on the ground
tonight for citizens to sign," Smitherman says.  Citizens may contact
the Cincinnati NAACP at 513-281-1900 for more information.
